Fan’s from across the country rejoiced last night as Singer-Songwriter Prince presented Rapper Common and Singer-Songwriter John Legend a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for their original soundtrack, ‘Glory’ from the movie ‘Selma.’ They rejoiced not just because they won the prestigous award and it’s a monumental feat for the MLK civil rights movement film, but because of the emotional and moving speech Rapper Common made after receiving the award.
Although the win was a great accomplishment for the MLK film, it was Common’s acceptance speech referencing civil rights, protests against police brutality, and racial injustice that stole the show. As he talked about his experience while participating in the making of the film, Common’s acceptance speech flowed beautifuly, was very thought provoking and emotional as he referenced civil rights, protests against police brutality, and racial injustice. His speech was capitvating and was one he didn’t have necessarily cite past or present references to understand what he was talking about. His speech spoke volumes of the truths of todays world, with a hint of dark past, that have seemingly come full circle.

As he accepted his Golden Globe, Common stated:

“The first day I stepped on the set of Selma, I began to feel like this was bigger than a movie,” Common said.

“As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights Movement, I realized I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter who was killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers, murdered in the line of duty. ‘Selma’ has awakened my humanity.”

Well done Common for that wonderful speech. Congratulations to all involved in the making of the Selma movie. The film was also nominated for 2015 Best Motion Picture, Drama. Rapper Commong and singer songwriter, John Legend won for ‘Best Original Song’. To hear the song in its entirety, visit selmamovie.com.
