WASHINGTON — Former four-time District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry, 78, died at midnight on Sunday, Nov. 23 at the District’s United Medical Center, after having been released earlier that Saturday evening from Howard University Hospital.

The family of Barry released a statement announcing his death. He leaves behind his wife, Mrs. Cora Masters Barry and his only child, son Marion Christopher Barry.

The former mayor was admitted Thursday to Howard University Hospital because he was no feeling well, according to his spokeswoman.

Barry had a serious blood infection earlier this year and endured two lengthy hospital stays. He suffers from diabetes and has a transplanted kidney. He’s also a prostate cancer survivor.

Barry released his autobiography “Mayor For Life, the Incredible Story of Marion Barry, Jr.” in June 2014. He will appear on Barry on Oprah’s “Where Are They Now” program this Sunday at 9 p.m. EST.

Thank you Mr. Barry for all you hard work and  the great memories.
